Why we do what we do

Local grassroots initiatives lead the way

At the core of ACSI's work is the premise that the best way to bring about sustainable development, change, and dignity is for local grassroots initiatives to lead the way. Grassroots organizations have the expertise, experience, and tools and are uniquely positioned to collaborate with each other and with local communities to deliver holistic programs and lasting impact.

ACSI was born out of the disruption the pandemic caused across sectors, and the recognition that meeting individual organizational needs alone would pose a bigger challenge than developing one collective strategy to serve partners and their beneficiary communities together.

Our strategic focus

Sharpening our focus as funding shrinks

Funding for health, education and livelihoods in Uganda is shrinking and moving into government systems, and partners rightly ask how to make every shilling count. ACSI is responding by sharpening its focus: we organise our three themes around people and places, delivering integrated support where members are already present, trusted and effective.

ACSI is a coalition of 13 community organisations delivering integrated, cost-effective health, education and livelihood results in the communities where members already work.

A clear, integrated focus, with one or two flagship programmes chosen on evidence of where we can do the most good.

Institutional Strengthening

Sound governance, legal compliance and audited financial systems that members and partners can trust.

Member Capacity Strengthening

Stronger members through shared skills in fundraising, financial management and communication, peer learning, and a shared understanding of the changing funding landscape.

Evidence and Sustainability

Results reported alongside what they cost, and diversified, sustainable funding for the coalition and its members.
